Life in Roma, Queensland – 1950

Through schoolyards, race days, auctions, dances and everyday street scenes, these photographs capture the character of one Queensland country town during the post-war years.
In 1950, Roma was a thriving country town at the heart of Queensland's grazing and agricultural districts. Located in the Maranoa region, the town served as a commercial, social and community hub for families, farmers and businesses across the surrounding countryside.
Today, these photographs provide a remarkable glimpse into everyday life in regional Australia during the post-war years.
The streets of Roma were lined with shops sheltered by wide verandahs, a distinctive feature of many Queensland towns. These shaded walkways protected locals from the harsh summer sun while creating busy gathering places where people could shop, meet friends and conduct business.
Away from the main street, the rhythm of community life continued. Children attended local schools, cyclists travelled through quiet streets, and families gathered for social events that formed the backbone of country-town life.
Photography from the period reveals a town that was both hardworking and close-knit. Agricultural auctions, race meetings and community dances brought people together and played an important role in the local economy and social calendar. For many residents, these events were opportunities to reconnect with neighbours, celebrate achievements and strengthen community bonds.
The surrounding countryside was equally important to the region's identity. Farming and cattle grazing supported the local economy, with stockmen, farmers and rural workers helping shape the character of western Queensland. Images of cattle, harvest machinery and rural life remind us of the strong connection between Roma and the land that sustained it.
What makes these photographs particularly special is that they capture ordinary moments that might otherwise have been forgotten. Schoolchildren at play, a busy photo booth, a bicycle ride through town, a day at the races, or a Saturday night dance all provide valuable insights into everyday Australian life during the middle of the twentieth century.
More than seventy years later, these images remain an important record of a community, its people and its way of life.
The Roma QLD – 1950 Collection brings these moments together, preserving a visual snapshot of one Australian country town at a time when community, connection and local identity were at the centre of everyday life.
