THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPH  

In 1950, Coolangatta was emerging as one of Queensland's premier beach destinations, drawing surfers and holidaymakers to its pristine coastline. Greenmount Bay, with its calm waters and sweeping views, was already becoming a favourite gathering place for the growing surfing community.

This photograph captures a relaxed moment in the bay, with surfers and their boards enjoying the water during an era when surfing was still developing into the iconic Australian pastime it would later become. Long before modern surf culture and crowded line-ups, days at the beach were simple, social and closely connected to the natural environment.
