A restored archival photograph capturing the character of Roma's main street during 1950. With its timber verandahs, parked vehicles and pedestrians going about their day, the image preserves a snapshot of everyday life in regional Queensland during the post-war era. Professionally framed and presented as part of the OKRetro Australian Heritage Collection.

STORY BEHIND THE PHOTO

Throughout much of Queensland, long covered verandahs became a defining feature of country towns. Designed to provide shade from the harsh summer sun, they created comfortable walkways that connected shops, businesses and community life along the main street.

This photograph captures Roma in 1950, a time when regional centres were thriving hubs for surrounding farming and grazing districts. Cars line the street while locals move between businesses beneath the shelter of the verandahs. The scene reflects an era when country towns served as the commercial and social heart of rural Australia.

Beyond its historical significance, the image preserves many details of mid-century Australian life, from architecture and transport to the rhythms of everyday commerce. Carefully restored from archival sources, it offers a nostalgic glimpse into regional Queensland and the communities that helped shape modern Australia.
